Community Building

Community Action Team (CAT)

Lawrence Heights & Neptune residents and grassroots groups meet together “to share what we know, discuss what we want, learn together, and build a stronger voice for our needs.”  Community Action Team is working on:

- Facilitating space for resident-to-resident dialogue and organizing. Outcomes:
• Bus Tour to view Donmount revitalization and speak with residents moving back into their redeveloped TCHC community.
• Series of thematic discussions related to revitalization topics.

- Sharing, analysis and strategizing in advance and after public meetings related to revitalization.

- Advocating for ongoing repairs and safety infrastructure in the present (i.e. not putting basic rights on hold).

- Initiating and collaborating on research into Affordable Housing options, as well as a student research project on the Regent Park Experiences of Developing an Employment Plan.

- Providing leadership training opportunities. Outcome:
• 2008-09 20+ week training program for residents interested in leadership within revitalization planning.

- Supporting resident leaders in documenting their concerns and priorities Outcome:
• Grassroots Priorities for Revitalization.

Community Action Team group of resident leaders meets twice a month to discuss issues and take action on neighbourhood issues, especially safety and revitalization. For more information and upcoming dates, contact: Nathalie Zeemel at 416-319-6058
